Heavy rains unleashed by Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond have devastated parts of Mexico, causing floods and landslides that have killed 47 people, with at least 38 still missing, according to government reports.
The states hardest hit include Veracruz, Hidalgo, and Puebla. Veracruz recorded 18 deaths; Hidalgo, 16; Puebla, 12. In Querétaro, a child was killed in a landslide.
Meteorological data show that in some parts of Veracruz, up to 21 inches (54 cm) of rain fell between October 6 and 9, causing rivers such as the Cazones to burst their banks. In Poza Rica, neighborhoods experienced flooding over 12 feet deep during peak overflow.
Rescue efforts are underway, involving military personnel, civil protection agencies, and state-level disaster response teams. Authorities continue searching through mud-clogged villages, rebuilding access routes, restoring power and water, and evacuating residents.
