A new study named “A rockslide-generated tsunami in a Greenland fjord rang Earth for 9 days” was published in the Science journal, on September 12, which reveals the reason behind a strange 9-day vibration that was recorded on Earth’s greater part in 2023.
Furthermore, this publication investigated a mysterious global seismic signal that started on September 16, 2023, and lasted 9 days.
However, what was really strange about this global signal was that as opposed to the squiggly, fast period, lines recorded from an earthquake, it was rather homogeneous in altitude and had a very long, 92-second, period.
Puzzled scientists around the globe started discussing what the cause behind this weird seismic signal could be, while they named it an “Unidentified Seismic Object”, or USO.
More specifically, after conducting their research, they found that the starting point of this mystery lay in Dickson Fjord, Greenland.
Largely due to climate change, a glacier supporting the rock face of a 1,200-meter-high mount peak melted, causing it to collapse into the nearby fjord and trigger a 200-meter-high mega-tsunami.
They found that 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice came crashing into the water, while the geometry of the fjord itself, and the direction of the landslide all contributed to the generation of the mega-tsunami, which was successfully recreated through rigorous numerical modeling and the help of data collected by the Danish military.
These simulations concluded that the tsunami stabilized into a 7-meter-high long-duration seiche, that oscillated within the narrows of the fjord, creating the recorded signal, which peaked at a force of 5x1011 newtons.
Luckily, nobody got harmed in the event, as the tsunami damaged an unoccupied research station, and the area is popular for cruises.
