Panama is assessing widespread damage to homes, schools, churches, roads and bridges after a powerful earthquake sequence struck the country, with a fresh magnitude 6.1 earthquake shaking the southern region on October 12, three days after the main destructive tremors.
The latest earthquake struck at around 6:20 p.m. at a depth of approximately 10 km, about 18 km west of Rio Grande. No immediate casualties or additional property damage were reported following the event, but it added to several days of seismic activity that had already left communities dealing with damaged buildings, disrupted infrastructure and repeated aftershocks.

The sequence began on October 9 with magnitude 7.7 and 6.6 earthquakes centred in southern Panama. The strongest event was located around 10 km southwest of Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province at a depth of about 10 km. Shaking was felt across the country and into neighbouring Colombia, while tsunami warnings were initially issued for several countries along the Pacific coast.
More than 100 aftershocks were recorded in the following hours, including events of magnitude 5.8, 5.5 and 5.2. Panama subsequently declared a state of emergency as authorities began evaluating the scale of the damage.
Around 27 people were reported injured, with no deaths attributed to the earthquakes. Approximately 420 homes and a similar number of public schools sustained damage, together with seven hotels, at least 13 churches and nine bridges. The most heavily affected areas were the central provinces of Veraguas, Herrera, Cocle and Los Santos.
La Villa de Los Santos was among the communities showing some of the most visible structural damage. Homes were partially or completely damaged and the historic Church of San Atanasio suffered major collapse. The church, which had been designated a National Historic Heritage Site in 1938, was one of several older structures affected during the shaking. Cracks and partial collapses were also reported at buildings in Penonome, including the cathedral, the governor's office and a hotel.

Road infrastructure was affected by deep fissures, landslides and local damage, leaving some communities temporarily isolated. Nine bridges were reported damaged, while authorities continued inspecting transport links to determine where access could safely be restored.
Other essential infrastructure was also disrupted. One water treatment plant serving Panama City was operating at only about 20% capacity following the earthquakes. Temporary facilities were established at six hospitals, while Tocumen International Airport briefly suspended operations after the first major shock before reopening several hours later.
Approximately 300 people were evacuated from Isla Cana off the Pacific coast of Los Santos because of rising sea levels and rough conditions following the earthquakes. Other residents spent the night outdoors because of concerns over damaged homes and continuing seismic activity.
The relatively limited number of serious injuries despite the strength of the earthquakes contrasts with the substantial physical damage recorded across the country. Modern construction in Panama, particularly newer buildings designed under seismic requirements, appears to have performed differently from some older masonry structures, although detailed structural inspections will be required before broader conclusions can be drawn.
Three days after the initial earthquakes, the magnitude 6.1 event demonstrates that the emergency has not yet fully shifted into recovery. Inspections of damaged buildings, bridges, roads and public infrastructure are continuing while communities remain alert to further seismic activity and authorities determine which structures can safely return to normal use.
