Rain-induced landslides have hit a death toll of nearly 20,000 since 2007. For an overview of the landslides' locations NASA has updated the open source Global Landslide Catalog. The video released by NASA reveals very useful information on the statistics of landslides.
Global Landslide Catalog, the "first publicly available catalog of global rainfall-triggered landslides" as characterized by the space agency has been updated by its scientists and now provides an overview of the distribution of landslide-hit areas worldwide. Scientists used data and information from news reports and online databases for evidence regarding 6,000 rain-induced landslides since 2007.
Examining the data, they concluded that most events occurred in Asia, North America and Southeast Asia with the period of peak landslide occurrence from July to September. Safest areas from landslide occurrence appear to be Russia, northern Africa and central Australia, however this may imply a lack in reporting as a result of the low population density in the specific areas. In the United States, hundreds of landslides have been recorded around Appalachia and the West Coast, with Seattle being a hardly hit city, with over 100 slides being recorded since 2007 within the metropolitan area.
