Call for Papers for Special Issue on “Laboratory Testing for Geotechnical Engineering Practice: Case Histories”

TC101 on Laboratory Stress Strain Strength Testing of Geomaterials is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for Case Histories related to Laboratory Testing that will be published in ISSMGE’s International Journal of Geoengineering Case Histories.

Well-documented case histories demonstrating the application of laboratory testing to practical geotechnical engineering problems are particularly welcome. Contributions should provide sufficient information on the engineering problem, material characterization, testing program, interpretation of laboratory results, and their application to the assessment, design, construction, or performance evaluation of geotechnical structures.

Scope of the Special Issue

Case histories may relate to:

• Advanced laboratory testing and interpretation for geotechnical engineering applications;

• Laboratory characterization of natural, treated, reinforced, or unconventional geomaterials;

• Laboratory testing supporting the design and performance assessment of geotechnical structures;

• Case histories involving the use of laboratory testing to investigate unexpected or complex field behavior;

• Large-scale, non-conventional, or advanced laboratory testing techniques applied to engineering problems;

• Laboratory testing and field monitoring used in combination for the interpretation of ground behavior;

• Case histories involving challenging geomaterials, including tailings, mine wastes, and other non-textbook materials;

• Lessons learned from laboratory investigations that have contributed to improved design, construction, monitoring, or assessment of geotechnical infrastructure.

Submission Details

Interested authors are encouraged to submit a 300-word abstract by 13 November 2026 to Prof. Lucas Festugato (lucas@ufrgs.br). Authors should briefly describe the case history, the laboratory testing program, and its relevance to the engineering problem. 

Authors will be notified following the review of their abstract. Submission date of full papers is 12 February 2027. Please consult the Journal’s submission guidelines before you submit your paper. All papers will go through a peer-review process.

Publication of this special issue is expected in July 2027.
