Suspected mineshaft collapse swallows car in Redruth: managing risk in historic mining towns

A parked Mini partially subsided into a suspected mineshaft in a private car park behind Berrymans Bakery in Redruth, Cornwall, on 1 November 2025. The void is estimated at about two metres deep. There were no injuries. Cornwall Council’s contractor secured the area with fencing while the council works to identify the landowner and coordinate next steps. Witness accounts describe rubble continuing to fall shortly after the initial collapse. Historic records indicate repeated ground instability in Redruth and Camborne, where extensive recorded and unrecorded mine workings remain a legacy of centuries of extraction.

Because the collapse occurred on private land, liability and access arrangements must be confirmed before ground investigation proceeds.
