Communities in eastern Spain are assessing the damage left by several days of intense rainfall and flash flooding that killed at least three people, inundated homes and roads and disrupted transport across different parts of the country.
In Catalonia, two people died after torrential rain hit the region over the weekend. One man was killed when a wall collapsed in Tordera, north of Barcelona, while another person died in Montornes del Valles. Emergency teams were also searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar as authorities began dealing with the aftermath of flooded streets, damaged structures and submerged vehicles.

Homes and cars were inundated in areas including Bellvitge and Cornella near Barcelona, while sections of the road network were covered by deep standing water. Residents in El Masnou were photographed inspecting a collapsed wall beside the Riera d'Alella after floodwater passed through the area. Flights at Barcelona airport were cancelled or delayed, local rail services were disrupted and a number of public events were called off as the storm affected normal activity across the region.
Catalan authorities had issued a red alert as an exceptional Mediterranean weather system approached the coast, warning residents to remain indoors during the most dangerous period. The intense rainfall arrived quickly enough to overwhelm drainage systems and small watercourses, producing the type of rapid urban flooding that can leave little time for roads, underpasses and low-lying neighbourhoods to respond.
The flooding followed another deadly event around 500 km to the south in Madrigueras, Castilla-La Mancha. Around 140 litres of rain per square metre fell in approximately two and a half hours, sending water through the town, submerging vehicles and entering homes and businesses. A 102-year-old woman died after floodwater reportedly reached around one metre inside her home, while firefighters rescued about 90 people.

Images from Madrigueras in the following days showed streets coated with mud and debris, damaged vehicles and residents beginning to clear affected properties. With a population of only around 4,000, the scale of the emergency was considerable relative to the size of the town, particularly given the speed at which conditions deteriorated.
The latest events again show how concentrated rainfall can become a destructive flood within a very short period. Once drainage capacity is exceeded, water is rapidly redirected along streets, channels and low points, carrying sediment and debris while placing additional pressure on retaining walls, culverts and other structures in its path. Collapsed walls and damaged roads are among the visible consequences, but inspections in the coming days will also need to establish whether erosion, undermining or hidden damage has affected infrastructure beneath the surface.
Attention is now shifting from emergency response to cleanup, inspections and restoration of damaged transport links and properties. The full extent of the losses will become clearer as floodwater recedes and affected communities gain access to areas that were inaccessible during the height of the storms.
